Foodie Friday: Sweet and Sour Crockpot Venison Roast
The crockpot could be the single greatest cooking invention of all time — other then the discovery of fire, of course. And crockpot venison recipes are right up there in the top five, at least, for easy, delicious and time-saving cooking. Let’s face it, at the end of a long day at work there is hardly ever enough time for cooking a wholesome family meal with the venison in the freezer. The crockpot to the rescue!
The toughest part of cooking crockpot venison for me is usually just remembering to get the venison out of the freezer in time to thaw before I want to cook it. Many awesome crockpot venison recipes only require a few basic ingredients and 20 minutes or less to prep. It works great for getting everything set and turn on the crockpot before going to sleep for the night. Then the next morning before heading out to work, it’s all cooked and ready to toss in the refrigerator for dinner that night or the next several nights.
With turkey hunting season rolling right now and the fish starting to bite, the next couple of week are going to get pretty hectic, without much time or energy for making big meals every night. - 1 large venison shoulder roast
- 1/2 cup ketchup
- 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
- 1/2 cup cider vinegar
- 1 tablespoon mustard powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
Wash venison roast well and place in bottom of slow cooker. In a separate bowl, whisk together remaining ingredients, and pour over roast. Cook on low for 8 to 10 hours, turning roast once halfway through. Serve with choice of potato and remaining sauce. Enjoy!
